HISTORIC ARMENIA-AZERBAIJAN PEACE DEAL TAKES STEP FORWARD IN WASHINGTON

A significant milestone has been reached in the long-standing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, with a peace agreement being initialed in Washington on August 8. This development marks a crucial advancement toward normalizing relations between the two nations.

According to a senior Azerbaijani official, while the initialing represents substantial progress, it does not yet constitute a final signature. For the agreement to be formally signed and implemented, the Armenian side is required to undertake specific measures. A key issue highlighted is that Armenia’s Constitution reportedly still includes provisions inconsistent with Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Officials state that aligning Armenia’s fundamental law with the spirit and text of the peace agreement is essential for achieving a durable peace.

The progress is attributed to the constructive political will from both sides, supported by several international partners. The personal involvement and efforts of the U.S. President were specifically acknowledged as playing a vital role.

Should the process continue with seriousness and determination, it is believed a new chapter of cooperation, stability, and shared prosperity could begin for the South Caucasus region.
