EUROPEAN COMMISSION PRESIDENT RULES OUT GERMAN PRESIDENTIAL BID

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has definitively stated she will not be a candidate in Germany’s 2027 presidential election, putting an end to recent speculation about her political future.

In a recent statement, von der Leyen emphasized her complete commitment to her current role, noting that her responsibilities as head of the European Union’s executive body preclude her from considering other positions. “My full focus remains on serving as European Commission President,” she affirmed.

The senior European official has led the Commission since 2019 and was reappointed to the position last year. Her current term extends through 2029.

Recent reports in German political circles had suggested von der Leyen might consider stepping down before completing her full term to pursue the German presidency. However, her latest comments appear to definitively close that door, confirming her intention to see through her current mandate at the helm of the European Commission.
