ARMENIA TO EXTEND NUCLEAR PLANT OPERATIONS AS PART OF LONG-TERM ENERGY STRATEGY

YEREVAN – The Armenian government has confirmed plans to continue operating the existing nuclear power plant until 2036 as part of a broader strategy to ensure national energy security and support regional development. The decision was announced during a high-level international forum on atomic energy held in Moscow.

Approximately 30% of the country’s electricity is generated by the nuclear facility, which remains a cornerstone of Armenia’s energy system. Officials emphasized that maintaining this capacity is essential for the stability of the national power grid.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to operational safety, noting that all procedures at the plant are conducted in strict compliance with standards set by international nuclear regulatory bodies. Regular inspections and safety upgrades are being carried out to ensure reliable and secure performance.

The extended operation of the nuclear facility is viewed as a transitional measure while the government evaluates future energy projects, including the possible construction of new power units. Officials highlighted that nuclear energy will continue to play a significant role in the nation’s energy mix as it pursues sustainable and diversified sources of electricity.
