YEREVAN – An employee of Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been taken into custody on suspicion of state treason, according to an official statement from the country’s Investigative Committee.
The criminal case was initiated based on evidence that the individual allegedly engaged in activities aimed at betraying state interests. Investigators claim the employee provided confidential information to a foreign state, creating conditions for hostile actions against Armenia.
A pre-trial detention order has been issued against the accused, who now faces charges under Article 418, Part 1 of Armenia’s Criminal Code, which deals with state treason.
Authorities have clarified that the investigation has found no evidence implicating other individuals in the alleged crimes. Contrary to some media reports, officials confirmed the suspect was not a high-ranking diplomat and did not hold the position of Armenian consul.
The investigation remains ongoing. Under Armenian law, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty through a court verdict.
