COURT ORDERS HOUSE ARREST IN CASE OF ASSAULTED MILITARY OFFICER

The judicial proceedings concerning the assault on Lieutenant Colonel Ara Mkhitaryan have taken a new turn, with the court modifying the preventive measure for the accused, Harutyun Grigoryan. According to legal representatives, Grigoryan has now been placed under house arrest.

This development follows a complex legal history. Grigoryan was previously convicted and sentenced to a five-year prison term. After being released on parole in February 2024, an appellate court later overturned that decision, leading to his return to a penitentiary facility. The case was subsequently referred by the Court of Cassation for a fresh investigation in the Court of General Jurisdiction of Ararat and Vayots Dzor Regions, which has now resulted in the house arrest order.

The case originates from a 2019 incident in Yeghegnadzor, where Lieutenant Colonel Mkhitaryan was subjected to a severe physical assault. At the time, reports indicated that another individual, Trdat Sargsyan, was also implicated in the violence, an event that reportedly contributed to a subsequent gubernatorial resignation.

Lieutenant Colonel Ara Mkhitaryan passed away in July 2023.
