The European Union’s top diplomat has formally proposed a reduction in trade with Israel and the imposition of sanctions on certain far-right Israeli ministers. The official stated the objective is to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza rather than to penalize Israel.
“This conflict must be brought to an end,” the diplomat emphasized. “The immediate priorities are halting the widespread suffering, ensuring the release of all hostages, and improving the dire humanitarian conditions.”
The proposal now faces an uncertain future, as it requires the backing of a majority of the EU’s 27 member states. Past criticisms have targeted the bloc for its perceived inability to exert sufficient influence to end the hostilities in the Palestinian enclave.
In a related development, a spokesperson for the German government confirmed that Berlin is reviewing the proposed measures but has not yet reached a final decision on its position.
