FINLAND EXTENDS BORDER CLOSURE WITH RUSSIA

Finland’s Minister of Internal Affairs has confirmed that border crossing points with Russia will remain closed indefinitely, citing persistent security concerns related to migration pressures.

The minister emphasized that the threat of orchestrated migration from Russia continues to pose significant challenges to border security. This assessment was reinforced during discussions with migration and security officials.

Border restrictions were initially implemented in November 2023 in response to what authorities described as uncontrolled movement of third-country nationals through Russian territory. The closure has been repeatedly extended as the situation continues to warrant strict border controls.

The Finnish government maintains that the current security environment necessitates keeping border checkpoints closed until further notice, with no timeline provided for when normal cross-border operations might resume.
