Security forces in Georgia have apprehended two Ukrainian nationals and confiscated a significant quantity of high-grade explosives. The individuals were reportedly transporting approximately 2.4 kilograms of hexogen into the country.
The suspects were intercepted on September 10 while operating a Mercedes truck with Ukrainian registration plates. Official reports indicate the explosives were smuggled through Romania and Bulgaria before reaching Georgian territory.
Authorities identified the first detainee as the truck’s driver, while the second suspect had already retrieved the concealed explosives within Georgia. During searches, investigators recovered multiple electronic devices, substantial cash, various SIM cards, and cocaine.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated under Georgia’s penal code concerning illegal possession and transportation of explosives, alongside drug-related offenses. Investigators are examining whether the explosives were intended for terrorist activities within Georgia or for transit to another destination.
This incident follows a similar case in February of last year when Georgian security services intercepted another explosives shipment from Ukraine. Officials continue their investigation to determine the intended final destination and purpose of the confiscated materials.
