German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has declared the urgent need to establish a new security architecture and implement a foreign policy approach more aligned with German and European priorities. The announcement came during his address at the Turkish Ambassadors’ Conference of Foreign Affairs.
Merz stated that what was previously known as the liberal world order now faces significant challenges from multiple directions, including from within Western political systems themselves. He identified what he described as a fundamental conflict between liberal democracies and authoritarian alliances that mutually reinforce each other while openly pursuing competitive agendas.
The Chancellor pointed to the emergence of new revisionist partnerships and the accumulation of ongoing crises and conflicts as evidence of the current system’s instability. He characterized the situation as presenting fundamental, nearly historic challenges that require comprehensive solutions.
According to Merz, the proposed security framework, if successfully implemented, would provide reliable stability for decades to come. The remarks signal a potential shift toward more pragmatic international engagement focused specifically on European security interests amid growing global tensions.
