In a recent interview, veteran German footballer Thomas Müller has weighed in on one of football’s most enduring debates, naming Lionel Messi as the greatest player of all time.
The 35-year-old athlete, who recently joined Canadian club Vancouver Whitecaps, acknowledged the exceptional qualities of both Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo throughout their careers. However, he ultimately gave the edge to the Argentine superstar.
“Throughout my career, I’ve witnessed both Messi and Ronaldo achieve incredible things,” Müller stated. “While both players have demonstrated extraordinary ability, Messi possesses a certain elegance that sets him apart.”
Müller revealed that his perspective on the matter has evolved over time. “Earlier in my career, I might have leaned toward Ronaldo,” he admitted. “But witnessing Messi’s performances, particularly on the world stage, shifted my view.”
The German international also noted how his own appreciation for the sport has matured. “As I’ve grown older, I’ve developed a deeper appreciation for the artistic aspects of football,” Müller explained. “I now value style and aesthetic quality alongside effectiveness and dedication.”
Müller’s professional move to North America comes after an extensive career with German powerhouse Bayern Munich, where he established himself as one of the sport’s most respected figures.
