GYUMRI MAYOR DEFENDS STANCE ON STATEHOOD AMID GOVERNMENT CRITICISM

Gyumri Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan has responded to recent political criticism, declaring he will not engage in personal attacks but is prepared to address accusations individually. The mayor’s remarks follow statements from the country’s Prime Minister, who called for his removal from public life over comments regarding national sovereignty.

Ghukasyan emphasized that Armenia faces significant internal and external challenges and questioned the focus on his statements rather than pressing national issues. He defended his position on the necessity of strategic alliances to protect Armenia’s statehood, clarifying that such partnerships should not compromise the nation’s independence.

The mayor reiterated that any country—whether Russia, the United States, or others—that threatens Armenia’s sovereignty would be considered an adversary. He also stood by previous controversial remarks, labeling those who distort his words as dishonorable.

The exchange highlights ongoing political tensions as officials debate approaches to safeguarding national interests amid complex geopolitical circumstances.
