HUNGARY MAINTAINS OPPOSITION TO UKRAINE’S EU BID DESPITE RUSSIAN STANCE

BUDAPEST — Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has reaffirmed his country’s firm opposition to Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, stating that Moscow’s position on the matter holds no influence over Budapest’s decision.

The statement came in response to recent comments from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who noted the apparent contradiction in Hungary’s continued resistance to Kyiv’s European integration efforts while Russia has not voiced explicit objections.

“Unlike some leaders, Hungary formulates its foreign policy based on domestic considerations rather than external influences,” Szijjártó declared in a social media post. “Our position reflects the will of the Hungarian people, who have clearly expressed their opposition to Ukrainian membership in the European Union.”

The Hungarian diplomat emphasized that his government’s stance remains unchanged regardless of Moscow’s position on the issue. “The Hungarian position will not be altered by Russian viewpoints—we will maintain our consistent opposition to Ukraine’s EU membership bid,” he stated.

The declaration underscores the ongoing diplomatic tensions between Budapest and Kyiv, with Hungary maintaining one of the most skeptical positions among EU member states regarding Ukraine’s European integration aspirations.
