YEREVAN – Iran and Russia are set to formalize a comprehensive agreement for the construction of eight new nuclear power facilities, according to a senior Iranian energy official. The deputy chairman of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization confirmed that the intergovernmental pact mandates Russian involvement in developing these nuclear plants.
Under the terms of the agreement, Tehran is required to formally notify Moscow before initiating construction of any additional nuclear facilities beyond the initial eight. The official stated that necessary preparatory work, including site selection and technical evaluations, has already been completed.
Site inspections and contractual discussions have concluded, with the formal signing scheduled for this week. This step will trigger the operational phase, enabling the commencement of engineering development and supplementary activities for the nuclear projects.
The partnership represents a significant expansion of nuclear energy cooperation between the two nations, though specific locations and timelines for the construction projects were not disclosed in the announcement.
