YEREVAN – A comprehensive network of transportation routes connecting Iran to Armenia and onward to the Black Sea is under development, according to statements made during a diplomatic farewell event. The outgoing envoy detailed ongoing and planned infrastructure projects that are set to significantly enhance regional connectivity.
The official confirmed that construction is advancing on a high-speed roadway beginning in Barzavan. An Iranian firm is also finalizing work on a 32-kilometer segment stretching from Agarak toward the Armenian border.
A major forthcoming project is the 7.5-kilometer Kajaran tunnel. Contractors for this significant undertaking are expected to be selected shortly, with completion anticipated within the established schedule.
Following the tunnel, plans are in place for a 63-kilometer highway. While a tender process for this segment has not yet been initiated, it is expected to be announced in the near future.
The Armenian government has reportedly expressed strong interest in developing this transit route and is exploring financing options with international financial institutions. The envoy expressed confidence that the completion of this integrated transport network will create a “revolution” in bilateral transit, substantially increasing cargo flows.
This corridor is envisioned to provide a vital link from Iranian ports on the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea, through Armenia, to the Black Sea region.
