BEIRUT — The Lebanese government has announced a comprehensive disarmament initiative requiring all paramilitary organizations, including the Hezbollah movement, to transfer their weapons to the national army by the conclusion of this year.
Prime Minister Navaf Salam confirmed the timeline during discussions with a visiting United States congressional delegation, emphasizing that consolidating military authority under state control represents a fundamental national priority.
“The centralization of all weaponry under state authority is non-negotiable,” Salam stated. “This strategic direction is essential for Lebanon’s national revival and future stability.”
Official reports indicate the weapons transfer process to the Lebanese Armed Forces has already commenced and is being executed through a phased implementation plan. This roadmap is also expected to facilitate the withdrawal of Israeli military units from five southern border regions currently under their control.
The disarmament program forms part of broader security sector reforms aimed at strengthening state institutions and establishing uniform military authority throughout the country.
