Russia intends to formally commence the procedure for selecting the next United Nations Secretary-General during its presidency of the UN Security Council in October, according to its permanent representative.
The country’s envoy confirmed that the process will be launched this month, though he clarified that this does not mean a final decision will be reached immediately. He cited the previous selection cycle, where the formal appointment occurred in mid-December, as an example of the typical timeline.
The selection of the UN’s top diplomatic position follows established procedures where the Security Council recommends a candidate to the General Assembly for appointment. The current Secretary-General’s term concludes at the end of the year, making the upcoming selection a significant diplomatic event.
