UEFA REJECTS WIDESPREAD INTERNATIONAL MATCHES FOR DOMESTIC LEAGUES

European football’s governing body has issued a formal position regarding the staging of domestic league matches outside their home countries, indicating limited backing for such initiatives across the continent.

In an official communication, UEFA clarified that while it has approved two specific international fixtures, broader support for relocating national league games abroad remains absent. The organization pointed to current FIFA regulations, which it described as insufficiently detailed, as a contributing factor to its cautious approach.

The statement noted that UEFA’s Executive Committee evaluated recent proposals without establishing definitive precedents, given the ambiguous nature of existing international football guidelines. The governing body emphasized its commitment to collaborating with FIFA to develop clearer regulations that maintain the integrity of domestic competitions.

Two matches have received approval under this framework: a La Liga encounter between Villarreal and Barcelona scheduled for Miami, United States, and a Serie A fixture featuring Milan and Como set for Melbourne, Australia.

UEFA’s position signals a measured approach to international expansion of domestic football, balancing commercial opportunities with the preservation of traditional league structures.
